Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir – A joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday in Baramulla’s Panipura, Sopore, following reports of suspicious terrorist activity. The security forces observed the movement of armed terrorists, and when challenged, the militants opened indiscriminate fire. The forces retaliated effectively, and the operation is still ongoing.
In a post on X, the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed the development:
“On 07 Nov 24, based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists, a joint operation launched by the Indian Army & J&K Police in Panipura, Sopore, Baramulla. Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops, and on being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. Our troops effectively retaliated. Operation is in progress.”
Recent Surge in Terrorist Activities
The operation in Baramulla comes amid a spike in terrorist activity across Jammu and Kashmir, with several encounters reported in the past week.
Kupwara District: A terrorist was killed in a security operation on Thursday. The encounter began after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Margi area of Lolab, based on intelligence about the presence of terrorists. An AK rifle, two hand grenades, and four AK rifle magazines were recovered from the site.
Bandipora District: One terrorist was neutralized on Wednesday during a joint operation between the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF in Chuntawadi Kaitsan. This operation followed a gunfight between security forces and militants.
Arrests and Attacks: On Tuesday, police, along with 22RR and 92 BN CRPF, arrested a terrorist associate, Ashiq Hussain Wani, from Sopore. Additionally, on November 3, a grenade attack at Srinagar’s Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) injured 12 people, including a woman.
Recent encounters have also resulted in the deaths of two terrorists in Anantnag on November 2, and the neutralization of three terrorists in Akhnoor on October 29 after an attack on an army convoy.
Terrorist activities have been on the rise in the region, with civilian casualties and security forces engaged in multiple high-stakes operations to curb the violence.
