On Wednesday, the ICG’s Sea Rescue Sub-center stated that it had received a call regarding a medical emergency involving a patient on the commercial vessel called Helen.
On the way to Durban from Sikka in South Africa, the Panamanian-flagged vessel was nearly 200 km away from Porbandar when the officer in charge called for the evacuation of an Indian officer for urgent medical attention as his first finger on the right hand was amputated.
Interceptor Boat C-161, which belongs to the ICG, was dispatched to reach where the merchant’s vessel was by dawn on 26 April.
The officer received first aid treatment on a Coast Guard interceptor boat before he was evacuated safely from the vessel and then transported to Porbandar.
Early morning, the officer reached Porbandar and, from there, was sent to the relevant local authorities for further care.
