Kamarajar Port (KPL) has identified 22 projects related to Port modernization, capacity expansion and connectivity, Shri Sunil Paliwal, IAS., Chairman cum Managing Director, has said.
Addressing the gathering at the Independence Day Celebration at Kamarajar Port, Shri Sunil Paliwal, said: “Under Sagarmala, Kamarajar Port has identified 22 projects related to port modernization , capacity expansion and connectivity which attributes to a capacity addition of 135.62 MTPA at an investment cost of Rs.12,647.34 Crores.”
Shri Sunil Paliwal stated: “Out of 22 projects, 10 projects have already been completed at a cost of Rs.6978.71 Cr with a capacity addition of 40.44 MTPA. Six projects are under implementation stage (Capacity addition- 29.60 MTPA and Cost of Rs.1980.50 Cr) and remaining 6 projects are in pipeline (Capacity addition- 65.60 MTPA and Rs.3688.13 Cr).”
From a humble beginning with a Port capacity of 12 MMTPA, KPL has now gained a robust growth and has a handling capacity at 54.44 MMTPA and has set ambitious projections of 84.44 MMTPA by 2021-22 through Development of State-of-the-Art New Cargo Terminal under Public Private Partnership model / Captive models.
Shri Sunil Paliwal stated: “Considering the increasing road traffic movement of import / export of cargoes, Port is executing the Southern port access road (Road widening from 2 lane to 4 lane) from Vallur to Port Main Gate at a cost of Rs.195 Cr through TNRDC. Works are in progress and expected completion by June 2022.”
“Global economic prospects describes both the immediate and near-term outlook for the impact of the pandemic and the long-term damage it has dealt to prospects for growth. Our port has also witnessed decline in cargo traffic of around 35% compared to the same period in last year,” concluded Shri Sunil Paliwal.
