KOCHI/KASARAGOD: A CBI court on Friday sentenced 10 individuals to life imprisonment and four others, including former CPM MLA from Uduma KV Kunhiraman, to five years in prison in connection with the 2019 double murder of two Youth Congress workers in Periya, Kasaragod, Kerala. The verdict came after the court had found the accused guilty on Saturday.

The 10 convicted individuals were sentenced to life imprisonment for two counts of murder and criminal conspiracy, with each also fined Rs 2 lakh. The case pertains to the brutal killing of the Youth Congress workers on February 17, 2019, while they were riding home on a motorbike. A hit squad ambushed them and attacked them with weapons.

The judge described the case as “a bizarre offshoot of political vandalism culminating in the premature death of two vibrant youths.”

In Kasaragod, emotions ran high as the verdict was delivered. At the memorial of the victims, their parents and relatives were visibly distraught. Many broke into tears and expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, voicing their hope that the convicts would face the death penalty.
