Sanket Bawankule, son of Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, reportedly fled the scene after his Audi collided with several vehicles in Nagpur on Monday. The incident led to the detention of two occupants of the car, Arjun Hawre and Ronit Chittamwar, while Sanket and two others escaped.
Arjun Hawre and Ronit Chittamwar were initially taken to a tehsil police station before being transferred to the Sitabuldi police station for further investigation. Their medical examinations are ongoing. Preliminary reports suggest that both individuals were intoxicated at the time of the crash, with blood tests being conducted to confirm alcohol levels.
The incident occurred around 1am when the Audi first collided with a vehicle belonging to Jitendra Sonkamble, who filed the complaint. The car also hit a moped, injuring its riders, and continued to damage several other vehicles near the Mankapur area, including a Polo car at a T-point.
The Polo driver pursued the Audi and managed to stop it near the Mankapur bridge, preventing Hawre and Chittamwar from fleeing. An official indicated that further action, including potential arrest of Hawre, is pending as the investigation continues.
A Sitabuldi police official stated, “A case of rash driving and other offenses has been registered based on Sonkamble’s complaint. No action has been taken yet against Sanket Bawankule and the two other occupants who fled.”
Chandrashekhar Bawankule confirmed that the Audi is registered in his son Sanket’s name and urged for a thorough and unbiased investigation. “The police should conduct a comprehensive investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The law must be applied equally to all,” he stated.
