MUMBAI: A 28-year-old man, Amey Darekar, who was arrested two years ago for allegedly pushing his girlfriend off a water tank in a Dahisar high-rise after a few drinks, was acquitted of the attempted murder charge by a sessions court on Thursday, reports Rebecca Samervel.
The acquittal followed testimony from the woman, 26, who told the court that Darekar never harmed her and expressed her belief that he should be released. She urged the court to allow him to move on with his life, stating that imprisoning him would serve no purpose.
Darekar had been charged under Section 307 of the IPC (attempted murder), which carries a potential life sentence. During the trial, five witnesses testified. The victim, Priyangi Singh, a BPO worker, who sustained serious injuries including a brain injury, broken spine, and bones from the fall, testified that she could not remember the events of the night of November 12, 2022. Her father spoke to TOI, saying, “We are still traumatized by the incident and the ongoing court hearings. After taking a dip in the Ganga, I felt we should end this matter. Our daughter is still suffering from her injuries and is wheelchair-bound. We don’t want to ruin the boy’s career.”
In her deposition on January 2 this year, Priyangi told the court, “I sustained multiple injuries to my brain and leg. I don’t know how they happened. I was hospitalized from the time of the incident until September 2023.”
The defense argued that a transcript of the woman’s videographed statement, which was created after the chargesheet was filed and bail pleas were denied, stated that the victim may have fallen accidentally.
