KOLKATA: A man allegedly exposed himself to a woman during a protest against the Kolkata rape-murder case, sparking outrage after the police reportedly allowed him to leave despite being caught by other protesters.
The incident took place near the Esplanade crossing, one of Kolkata’s busiest intersections, during a demonstration against the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The woman was sexually harassed during the protest, leading to immediate action by other demonstrators who apprehended the man and alerted nearby police officers, according to a report.
The police’s decision to release the man instead of detaining him led to further anger and frustration among the protesters. In response, a group of demonstrators gathered outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), demanding justice and accountability.
The victim has since filed a complaint, and a case has been registered under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police have launched an investigation, including a review of CCTV footage, to identify and apprehend the suspect.
The protest was organized by a group called “Amra Tilottoma” in response to the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor on August 9. The case, which remains unsolved, has led to nationwide protests demanding justice for the victim. The woman and other protesters have called on the police to take swift and appropriate action to ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens participating in peaceful protests.
