BIJNOR: A court in Bijnor has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for brutally assaulting his wife by putting chilli powder in her eyes before burning her alive three years ago.
The incident occurred on April 3, 2022, in Dhampur. Sonu Joshi, a resident of Jaspur, Uttarakhand, had lodged a complaint stating that his sister, who was 35 at the time of her death, married Sachin Kumar, 38, of Dhampur in 2012. Soon after the marriage, Sachin, along with his parents, Adesh Singh and Kavita, and other relatives, allegedly began torturing her.
According to the complaint, Sachin was addicted to intoxicants and frequently assaulted his wife when she objected. “Her in-laws supported him in harassing her. On the morning of April 3, he deliberately put chilli powder in her eyes. When she came out of the bathroom after washing them, his parents and other relatives grabbed her and poured diesel on her,” Joshi stated.
She was admitted to the hospital with severe burns and succumbed to her injuries on July 22, 2022.
Public prosecutor Pankaj Chauhan said an FIR was registered under charges of murder and dowry harassment. The police filed a chargesheet against Sachin, his father Adesh, and cousin Abhishek. However, due to lack of evidence, Adesh and Abhishek were later acquitted.
On Wednesday, Additional Sessions Judge Anupam Singh sentenced Sachin to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹25,000.
