VIJAYAWADA: In a shocking incident, a 34-year-old woman in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati district has been arrested for allegedly killing her 16-year-old daughter due to her continued relationship with a man from a different caste.

According to DSP Betapudi Prasad, the teenage girl had been in a relationship with a 20-year-old man for over three years. Despite strong opposition from both families, the couple reportedly got married last year. The girl’s mother had filed a police complaint against the man, leading to his arrest under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was later imprisoned.

The girl, who had become pregnant, was reportedly forced by her mother to undergo an abortion. After the man was released on bail a month ago, the girl tried contacting him again on April 4. Enraged by this, the mother allegedly smothered her daughter to death by covering her nose and mouth with her hands.

In an attempt to cover up the crime, the mother hurriedly cremated the girl’s body along the banks of the Swarnamukhi river within hours. The rushed cremation aroused suspicion, and on April 9, the local village revenue officer filed a police complaint.

As investigations began, the mother fled her home. However, she later surrendered to a village elder, confessing to the crime. She claimed her actions were driven by a mix of anger, fear, and pressure from societal norms.
