MUMBAI: The city is bracing for another spell of intense heat as temperatures soared to 37.4°C on Wednesday, marking a 4.4°C rise above the seasonal average. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that temperatures could climb further in the coming days, potentially hitting 38°C by Sunday.

This spike in heat mirrors a similar surge in late February, which triggered heatwave warnings on February 25 and 26. According to IMD’s latest observations, the Santacruz observatory recorded 37.4°C on Wednesday, up from 36.8°C on Tuesday, while the Colaba observatory logged 33.4°C, 2.2°C above normal and slightly higher than Tuesday’s 33.1°C.

Meteorologists attribute the soaring temperatures to strong easterly winds and predict that the heat will peak between March 9 and 11. With sweltering conditions ahead, Mumbaikars are advised to take necessary precautions against the rising mercury.
