DIMAPUR: A devastating mudslide in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district claimed the lives of six people and left several others missing, officials reported Wednesday. The mudslide struck after heavy rainfall caused significant damage to homes and a major section of NH-29. The landslide, which occurred at Pherima and Pagala Pahar, also washed away a stretch of the highway Tuesday night, disrupting road communication between Dimapur, the state’s commercial center, and Kohima.

According to a statement from the Nagaland government, the relentless rain and a recent cloudburst triggered the massive landslide at Pherima village in the Medziphema sub-division around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. An official confirmed that six bodies, including a woman’s, were recovered in Pherima, where numerous houses and vehicles were also destroyed by the mudslide. Rescue operations are ongoing to locate those still missing.
