KANPUR: A woman police constable was raped on her way home from Karwa Chauth celebrations in Kanpur Nagar district by a neighbour who offered her a ride on his motorcycle. Police stated the culprit had been arrested and jailed.

“On Saturday night, the woman chief constable from Ayodhya’s Reserve Police Lines arrived in Kanpur for Karwa Chauth. After getting off at Narwal, she was on her way to her hamlet, Budheda in Sen-Paschim Para, when her neighbor, Dharmendra Paswan, offered to ride her home on his bike,” said Harish Chander, additional commissioner of police (law and order).

“Instead of dropping her at her destination, Paswan took the woman to an isolated field and raped her.”

According to Ghatampur ACP Ranjeet Kumar, when Paswan attempted to disrobe her, the survivor sounded an alarm, but no one intervened. “The woman bit a part of the accused’s finger after the assault and somehow managed to flee,” he informed me.

The survivor reached a local police station and filed a FIR. Police conducted a search and apprehended Paswan within hours. He was brought before a judge and held in judicial custody for 14 days.

The accused has been charged under sections 64 (rape), 76 (criminal force on a woman with the purpose to disrobe), 115(2) (voluntarily causing injury), 117 (voluntarily causing serious hurt), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
