Marlink and Alpha Ori Technologies (AOT) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support shipowners, shipmanagers and charterers to collect data and use advanced analytics

The partners will provide connectivity, internet of things (IoT) services and analysis for improving vessel performance and monitoring the health of onboard systems.

This MoU brings together Marlink’s BridgeLink platform and satellite communications with AOT’s SmartShip optimising services to offer secure data delivery, remote monitoring and analytical resources.

By combining, both companies look to improve navigational safety and voyage performance and enable predictive maintenance and digital services for vessel operators, owners and managers across the maritime industry.

SmartShip is a digital platform with real-time data analytics to increase operational efficiency and unlock investment opportunities.

BridgeLink connects to any data-enabled equipment installed on ships, to collate data that is saved to the cloud for analysis by the client or third parties.

“The value of data to shipping’s digitalisation and decarbonisation process cannot be underestimated,” said Marlink president for digital services Nicolas Furgé.

“But not every shipowner has the resources to manage the capture of data or to turn this into performance information,” he said.

“This partnership with AOT gives shipowners a platform that can manage both vessel operations and maintenance planning, helping to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.”

Feedback collected by AOT and Marlink suggests most shipping companies will not hire IoT and data specialists or invest in inhouse IT infrastructure to capture the operational data they need, preferring to use off-the-shelf analytical apps that will provide insights and recommendations based on analysed contextualised data.

“It is imperative for shipowners and operators to leverage real-time digital data and make decisions based on real-time analytics,” said Alpha Ori Technologies joint chief executive Bala Sankaran.

“We see a sense of urgency and an upward trend in adoption driven by the sustainability agenda the maritime sector has embraced.”
