NEW DELHI: On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the ‘Make in India’ campaign, Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism about the future of manufacturing in India. He stated that India has significant potential to become a key player in the global supply chain and a reliable business partner.
In a LinkedIn post, he emphasized that “the momentum is in India’s favour,” despite the unprecedented challenges posed by the global pandemic. He noted that India remains on a growth trajectory and is recognized as a driver of global economic progress. The PM highlighted that the initiative has contributed to boosting exports, attracting investments, promoting manufacturing, and improving the ease of doing business.
Modi remarked that the impact of ‘Make in India’ demonstrates that India is “unstoppable,” with visible advancements across various sectors, including mobile phone manufacturing and steel. He pointed out that the number of mobile manufacturing units has increased from two a decade ago to 200 today, with exports rising by 7,500% to ₹1.2 lakh crore. Additionally, he noted that India has become a net exporter of finished steel, with production having increased by over 50% since 2014. He also mentioned success in sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy, and defense, crediting the production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme for attracting significant investments and creating numerous jobs.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of public support for the initiative’s success, recalling a ‘Mann Ki Baat’ episode where he discussed the need for a vibrant toy industry. He highlighted that exports in this sector have grown by 239%, while imports have been halved, benefiting local manufacturers and consumers.
He called upon young people to join efforts in elevating ‘Make in India’ further, urging a commitment to excellence and adopting “zero defect” as a guiding principle. Modi concluded by expressing a vision of building an India that not only meets its own needs but also serves as a global manufacturing and innovation powerhouse.
