Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to mark the commencement of construction for the Shinku La tunnel in Ladakh, a project expected to enhance connectivity between Manali and Leh. At 4.1 kilometers long and 15,800 feet above sea level, this tunnel will be the highest in the world, surpassing China’s Mila tunnel. The tunnel is a key infrastructure development aimed at improving military mobility and logistics, providing a crucial third route to Ladakh amid ongoing India-China tensions.
The Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road, a critical part of this project, was completed in March 2024. The Border Roads Organisation is overseeing this strategic infrastructure upgrade, and increased funding has been allocated to bolster defense capabilities along the border.
In other news, heavy rains have caused widespread disruption in Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand. The torrential downpours have led to landslides and flash floods, prompting extensive rescue operations. In Pune, Maharashtra, four people were reported to have been affected by rain-related incidents, and schools were closed following a ‘red alert’ issued by the IMD.
Gujarat has experienced severe waterlogging and damage to infrastructure, with three additional deaths confirmed. Himachal Pradesh is grappling with flash floods and landslides, while Uttarakhand has seen road closures due to the intense rainfall. Authorities, including the army and disaster response teams, are actively engaged in rescue and evacuation efforts to mitigate the impact and minimize casualties.
