NEW DELHI: Security forces killed a terrorist on Tuesday after an encounter erupted in the Dachigam forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police reported that a joint operation was launched with the Indian Army based on specific intelligence in the upper mountain belts of the Harwan area.
In a post on X, the Army’s Chinar Corps stated, “On 02 Dec 2024, acting on precise intelligence, a joint operation was conducted by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in Harwan, Srinagar. Initial contact with the terrorists was established during the search.”
Officials confirmed that the area has been cordoned off, with all roads leading to the encounter site sealed by the police. An official added, “The exchange of fire began during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) after specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the area.”
“The cordon has been tightened around the suspected hideout, and the operation resumed with the first light on Tuesday morning,” the official said.
In recent weeks, security forces have intensified counter-terrorism operations following a series of attacks by militants.
Earlier, on November 23, Baramulla Police, in collaboration with security forces, dismantled a terror hideout in the Kunzer area of Baramulla district. Acting on credible leads, the joint operation led to the recovery of arms and ammunition. The hideout was destroyed, thwarting potential terror plots aimed at disrupting peace in the Kashmir Valley, police said.
