A senior doctor, who played a key role in BMC’s Covid response, was arrested late Saturday evening following the death of a 60-year-old Mumbra woman, whom he allegedly ran over with his car on the premises of Sion Hospital the previous evening, police said.
Dr. Rajesh Dere, Head of the Hospital’s Forensics Department and former dean of the BKC COVID centre during the pandemic, was driving the vehicle, police confirmed.
Sources close to Dr. Dere reported that the woman collapsed in front of his car just minutes after he had started it.
Police have registered a case of causing death by negligence and rash driving and have also invoked sections related to furnishing false information.
According to the police, doctors treating the patient, Rubaida Shaikh, did not disclose the accident until officials reviewed CCTV footage that revealed a vehicle running her over.
