Telangana is set to have its second airport at Mamnoor in Warangal district, with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) granting approval for the project. This will be the state’s second airport after the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, Hyderabad.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao announced the development during a rally, “Praja Palana Vijayotsava Sabha,” in Warangal on Tuesday. He highlighted that the new airport would significantly boost the development of Warangal, located around 160 km from Hyderabad.

“Many states across India have multiple airports, with some having four or five. Telangana has only one airport so far, but now with AAI’s approval for Mamnoor, northern Telangana will see tremendous growth,” the Chief Minister said.

On Sunday, the state government sanctioned ₹205 crore for acquiring over 280 acres of land for the airport project. The AAI confirmed that the Warangal airport would be designed to accommodate A-320 type aircraft. Furthermore, the AAI will bear the infrastructure costs, as well as the operational and maintenance expenses of the new airport.

A master plan for the airport has already been drawn up, with an additional 253 acres of land needed for the expansion of the runway. The Telangana government has been asked to provide this land free of charge and free from encumbrances.

The AAI also requested that the state government expedite the land handover and secure the no-objection certificate from Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL), which manages Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Since Mamnoor is located approximately 175 km away from Hyderabad airport, GHIAL granted its approval for the project following a board meeting on October 23.

Additionally, the Telangana government instructed the district collector to acquire the required 253 acres of land for the runway expansion and hand it over to the AAI.
