KOLKATA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned eleven police officers from Kolkata for questioning on Monday and Tuesday as part of its investigation into the criminal conspiracy and evidence tampering related to the RG Kar rape-and-murder case. This development follows a complaint made by the parents of the deceased 32-year-old PGT intern, who expressed their concerns regarding the “slow-paced and ineffective probe” to CBI Director Praveen Sood just two days prior. On January 20, a sessions court in Kolkata sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for his involvement in the crime. Additionally, a city court is currently reviewing a related case involving former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and former local Tala officer-in-charge Abhijit Mandal, both of whom were arrested but subsequently released on bail due to the CBI’s failure to file charges within the required 90-day timeframe. Sources indicate that the officers being summoned primarily operated at RG Kar’s police outpost, while others were stationed at the local Tala police station on August 9 and 10 of the previous year. The trainee doctor was tragically raped and murdered on August 9, an incident that sparked widespread protests from both medical professionals and the public in the city. The CBI has previously interrogated several Kolkata police officers, including senior officials who were part of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that initially investigated the case before it was transferred to the central agency by the high court. Many of these officers provided testimony during the recently concluded trial. Despite these developments, the victim’s parents have been outspoken regarding perceived shortcomings in the CBI’s investigation, citing issues such as inadequate cooperation and a lack of thoroughness in the probe.
