Manipur’s chief secretary, Prashant Kumar Singh, stated on Sunday that a week is ample time for individuals to hand over illegal firearms. “It could be accomplished in a single day. After the governor’s deadline passes, we will locate and seize any weapons,” he remarked during an event in Imphal East. On February 20, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla had given a seven-day deadline to the residents of the state to surrender any unlawfully possessed arms. On Saturday, at least 30 firearms that had been taken from security personnel were returned. The theft of weapons from military forces has been an ongoing problem in Manipur since the emergence of ethnic conflict on May 3, 2023. The chief secretary emphasized that illegal firearms in the possession of individuals or organizations present significant risks, making it crucial to recover them swiftly and peacefully. Stressing the importance of reinstating peace and stability, Singh promised that security presence on the state’s highways will be bolstered with extra personnel.
