A 50-year-old woman lost her life in Bengaluru on Monday after a live electric wire fell on her while she was walking in the Tavarekere area. The victim, identified as Manjamma from Chikkanahalli in Ramanagara, was electrocuted around 10 a.m. and died at the scene, prompting concerns about civic negligence in the city.
Eyewitnesses reported that two people were with Manjamma when the incident occurred. One attempted to rescue her but was prevented from doing so due to the risk of electrocution.
In response to the tragedy, police have filed charges against officials from the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM). A police spokesperson stated, “We have booked BESCOM officials in this case, and the investigation is ongoing.” The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
This incident echoes a similar tragedy from last year, when a 23-year-old woman and her nine-month-old baby died after stepping on a live wire near Hope Farm in Kadugodi. The mother, Soundarya, mistook the wire for an optical fiber cable. Her husband, Kumar, who was with them, survived but sustained electric shock while attempting to save his family.
Both incidents have raised serious concerns regarding public safety and the accountability of utility companies in Bengaluru.
