DEHRADUN: A construction worker from Uttar Pradesh lost his life, and another was critically injured when the cable of a lifting trolley snapped at an under-construction bridge over the Alaknanda River on Saturday night.
The incident occurred during construction on a bridge in Rudraprayag district, part of the Char Dham all-weather road project, linking the Gaurikund and Badrinath highways.
Rudraprayag’s disaster management officer, N.K. Rajwar, said, “The accident happened as the lifting trolley was transporting workers. Four labourers stranded in the trolley were rescued safely in an operation by the District Disaster Response Force that extended until midnight.”
The deceased worker, identified as 40-year-old Wasim from Saharanpur, succumbed to his injuries, while 28-year-old Prince was critically injured. Prince was initially treated at a community health center and later transferred to a medical facility in Srinagar for further care.
The bridge is being constructed by a private firm under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as part of the Char Dham all-weather road project, a key infrastructure initiative in the region.
