U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday expressed confidence that India would take appropriate action regarding the repatriation of illegal immigrants following discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “Discussed immigration with Modi. India will do what is right when it comes to taking back illegal immigrants.” The conversation between the two leaders took place on Monday, during which they discussed a range of issues. Trump also revealed that PM Modi is likely to visit the U.S. “sometime in February,” although India’s Ministry of External Affairs has yet to confirm the visit.

“I had a long talk with him this morning. He is going to be coming to the White House next month, probably February. We have a very good relationship with India,” Trump remarked.

The dialogue between the two leaders also covered global peace, security in the Indo-Pacific region, the Middle East, and Europe, as well as efforts to establish a fair bilateral trading relationship.

Following the conversation, PM Modi tweeted: “Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.”

The White House released a statement summarizing the talks, noting that both leaders discussed “expanding and deepening cooperation.” It also highlighted their shared commitment to advancing the U.S.-India strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad alliance.

The statement read: “President Donald J. Trump held a productive call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. The two leaders discussed expanding and deepening cooperation and addressed a range of regional issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe.”

Trump emphasized the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made defense equipment and ensuring a balanced bilateral trade relationship. The leaders also touched on plans for Modi’s upcoming White House visit, underscoring the strength of the strategic ties between the two nations.

India is set to host the Quad Leaders’ summit for the first time later this year, reinforcing its role in the growing Indo-Pacific partnership.
