Raipur: Two crane operators lost their lives after a crane collapsed and threw them into molten slag at a factory in the Siltara industrial area of Raipur late on Saturday. The victims died on the spot from severe burns.
The deceased were identified as Sonu Rai, 29, from Bihar, and Jitendra Shrivas, 36, from Bilaspur. Both men, who were working the night shift, lived in rented accommodation in Sai Vihar Colony, Siltara.
According to Baleswar Lahre, in-charge of the Siltara police post, Rai and Shrivas were operating the crane from 8 PM to 8 AM. Upon receiving news of the accident, a police team rushed to the scene and launched rescue operations. The bodies of the two victims, who were trapped under the debris of the crane, were recovered and sent to Ambedkar Hospital for post-mortem.
After the post-mortem, the bodies will be returned to their families. The factory, which produces iron plates, angles, and blades, has provided a compensation of Rs 22 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
The cause of the crane collapse is under investigation.
