Tamil Nadu police have issued a warning about a new phishing scam targeting UPI users. Fraudsters are distributing a malicious app, disguised as the “PM Kisan Yojna” app, via WhatsApp. Once installed, this app can gain control over users’ SMS and device permissions, allowing scammers to intercept sensitive information and authorize unauthorized transactions.

The malicious app collects personal data such as Aadhaar numbers, PAN details, and dates of birth, which it uses to register devices on UPI platforms. This enables scammers to initiate unauthorized transactions. According to a statement from the state’s cybercrime wing, “The fraudsters intercept SMS traffic and manipulate UPI apps, using the stolen data to register devices and execute unauthorized transactions.”

The app also gathers sensitive personal information, including name, Aadhaar number, PAN, and date of birth, through a web form. The statement highlighted the serious financial and emotional distress caused to victims, as scammers exploit the trust associated with government benefit schemes and the urgency of their messages.

The police further revealed that multiple reports of unauthorized transactions, particularly via the PhonePe app, have been filed. Investigations have shown that in all these cases, the stolen funds were transferred to Amazon Pay accounts.

How to Protect Yourself from Such Scams

To protect yourself, the police advise avoiding downloading apps from unofficial sources, especially those shared via WhatsApp. Always use official government websites and apps from trusted app stores for financial transactions. If you suspect any unauthorized activity, report it to the authorities immediately.
