DUMKA: During his two-day visit to Dumka, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti expressed concern over the situation in Bangladesh, particularly regarding the persecution of Hindus and other religious minorities. Garcetti, accompanied by Malta’s High Commissioner Reuben Gauci, attended cultural events at Saint Xavier’s College and St Teresa High School, where he discussed issues related to religious freedom and minority rights.
Addressing questions about the situation in Bangladesh, Garcetti emphasized the global importance of protecting religious minorities, calling it essential for upholding democratic values and global peace. “The protection of religious minorities should be a priority, regardless of the country they live in. We have been very clear that minorities must be protected everywhere,” Garcetti stated, highlighting that safeguarding these communities is fundamental to both democracy and peace worldwide.
He further added that the United States has actively engaged with countries like India and Bangladesh to ensure the voices of these minorities are heard and protected. His comments come amid rising concerns over increasing violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus, which has sparked alarm in India regarding the safety of these communities.
Recent incidents of persecution have drawn significant attention, and the US government has consistently called for stronger measures to prevent such violence and to protect religious freedom.
During his visit, Garcetti also spoke highly of Jharkhand, describing it as the “heartland of India” and emphasizing the deep connection of the Santhal tribes with nature and tradition. “This entire region is a heartland of India, where people are closely tied to traditions that run deep in their daily lives,” he remarked.
