NEW DELHI: As military cooperation between Bangladesh and Pakistan deepens, India on Friday reaffirmed its vigilance over regional developments that could affect national security.
Reports suggest a Pakistani delegation, including ISI’s director general of analysis Maj Gen Shahid Amir Afsar, is currently visiting Dhaka following a Bangladeshi delegation’s recent tour to Pakistan, where they met with the chiefs of Pakistan’s armed forces.
Addressing the situation, external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized India’s proactive stance on security matters. “We closely monitor all activities in the region and those that impact national security. The government will take all necessary measures to safeguard our interests,” Jaiswal said during a media briefing.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Bangladesh, Jaiswal added, “We support a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. Our goal is to enhance cooperation to ensure mutual prosperity for the people of both nations.”
On the contentious issue of border fencing, which has faced objections from Bangladesh, Jaiswal clarified that the initiative is aimed at curbing illegal activities like human and cattle trafficking, in accordance with bilateral agreements.
India-Bangladesh relations have faced significant challenges since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August last year amid large-scale anti-government protests. Tensions further escalated under the Yunus-led interim administration, which struggled to contain violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.
