A 30 year old woman in Rajasthan was left battling for her life after a private hospital in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu removed her healthy right kidney instead of the diseased left kidney for which she was admitted on May 15th. The botched surgery was reported on Tuesday by a local language daily.
On May 18th, the patient identified as Eid Banu, from Nua village had been referred to Jaipur’s govt-run SMS Hospital when her condition declined after the surgery at Dhankar Hospital in Jhunjhunu, which was supervised by a specialist identified as Dr Sanjay Dhankar.
Banu’s cousin, construction labourer Sajid Ali informed ‘It was only at SMS Hospital, we learned that the healthy kidney had been removed instead of the infected one.’ Banu’s health stabilised over the next week at SMS Hospital and was considered fit to be discharged on May 25th but her body swelled on Tuesday, requiring emergency hospitalisation in a govt facility in Bikaner.
Jhunjhunu collector Chinmayee Gopal said, “We have seized the patient’s medical records and sealed the hospital.”
Additional chief secretary (health) Shubhra Singh mentioned that the department had revoked the hospital’s registration.
